Small Hall Closet Make Over

In keeping with the spirit of my last post.  The next project I decided to tackle was my hall closet/coat closet.   I love my little house, but my house doesn’t have great storage built into it.  Since it lacks storage I really have to create the storage and organization options to maximize the space.

In addition to coats and shoes I also store one of two large emergency kits in this hall closet.  The emergency kits are stored in backpacks so they can be “go” bags if needed.

Now for the organizing: I took similar steps as I did when I cleaned my pantry.  I took the items out of the closet and decided what needed to be tossed, donated, thrown away.  For this project most everything I took out went back in.

I repurposed a gray basket from another room, but if your looking for nice baskets here is a link to some at Storables.   All my flip flops and my husbands canvas shoes stacked upright nicely in the basket.  I also already had a dark brown shelving unit I made into a shoe rack.  The rack also came from Storables.  It pays to spend a little more and get a quality piece, it’s easy to clean and still looks like new.

Next step was to hang all of the jackets on Huggable Hangers which if you don’t have huggable hangers these are a must buy!!!!!!!! Did I say I love them!!!!!! Seriously, do not buy the cheap felt ones at the local discount store they break and are no where near as strong.  Huggable Hangers work for all size clothes including heavy jackets and I’ve never had one break!  I buy them from HSN.com. They also sell them at Target, but the colors are limited and cost a bit more.

For the top shelf I put three pairs of my shoes in sterilite plastic shoe boxes (you can buy these on Amazon.com) I stacked them on the top shelf next to my emergency kit and in a repurposed basket next to them are gloves, hats, and my umbrella.

Lastly, my husband loves baseball hats so to store those I purchased Command 3M hooks that peel away when I want to remove them.  The baseball hats hook nicely onto these and stay in place when the door opens and closes.

I forgot to take a before photo of the closet, but trust me it was bad.  I did take photos of the after so you can see how it all came together.

Happy Organizing,

XOXO
